RoboCop
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
One of the most iconic film scores of the 1980s, and a landmark of science-fiction cinema music. Poledouris created a march-driven main theme featuring percussionists banging on literal anvils — giving RoboCop a mechanically human, unexpectedly heroic sound that perfectly complemented Verhoeven's satirical vision. The score won the BMI Film Music Award and has been endlessly studied, referenced, and celebrated in the decades since. It represents the fullest early expression of the Poledouris–Verhoeven creative dynamic: earnest, muscular music applied to a film that operates simultaneously as action spectacle and social satire.
