The Hunt for Red October
Directed by John McTiernan
A Cold War masterpiece. The opening choral anthem — a Russian Orthodox hymn-like sequence — transforms a taut submarine thriller into something ancient, mythic, and deeply moving. Poledouris used the contrast between Russian choral idiom and Western orchestral writing to dramatise the film's geopolitical tensions with extraordinary sophistication. The score won the BMI Film Music Award and is widely regarded as one of the finest thriller scores ever composed. Poledouris repurposed a track originally written for No Man's Land (1987), demonstrating his instinct for finding the right music wherever it existed.
